What Is an Activated Carbon Filter?

Chemical Contaminants Are Adsorbed at the Molecular Level

An activated carbon filter is a water treatment unit in which water is passed through a bed of activated carbon granules or a compressed carbon block - allowing dissolved organic chemicals, chlorine compounds, pesticide residues, and odour-causing substances to be adsorbed onto the carbon's internal surface area, which exceeds 1,000 square metres per gram of media.

At PSD Energy & Water Pure System, activated carbon filters have been installed as standalone water treatment units and as pre-treatment stages in RO and multi-stage purification systems - across homes, commercial establishments, industrial facilities, and water treatment plants throughout Karur and Tamil Nadu.

"Activated carbon has an internal surface area of over 1,000 m² per gram — a single gram of carbon media contains more adsorption surface than a football field, making it one of the most efficient water treatment materials available."

Adsorption - How Carbon Works

Activated carbon removes contaminants through adsorption - a process in which dissolved organic chemicals, chlorine, and odour molecules are physically bound onto the enormous internal surface area of the carbon media, leaving water clean and taste-free.

Chlorine & Chloramine Removal

Municipal water supplies in Tamil Nadu are treated with chlorine and chloramine disinfectants - both of which are effectively neutralised by activated carbon filtration, eliminating their harsh taste, bleach odour, and long-term health concerns.

Pesticide & VOC Reduction

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), herbicides, and pesticide residues that enter groundwater through agricultural runoff are adsorbed by activated carbon - reducing concentrations to levels that are safe for daily human consumption.

RO Membrane Pre-Protection

Activated carbon filters are used upstream of RO membranes in purification trains to remove chlorine - which degrades polyamide RO membranes on contact - protecting membrane life and maintaining consistent purification performance.

Carbon Filter Types

GAC or Carbon Block? Choosing the Right Media

Two primary carbon filter configurations are supplied - selected based on required filtration precision, flow rate, application type, and integration with existing water treatment systems.

Most CommonResidential, Industrial & Pre-RO

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)

High Flow · Versatile · Refillable

Granular activated carbon filters use loose carbon granules packed into a pressure vessel - allowing high flow rates, easy media replacement, and flexible sizing. GAC filters are the most widely used carbon filtration technology for both domestic and industrial water treatment applications.

  • High flow rate - suitable for 5 to 200 LPH systems
  • Carbon media is easily refillable after exhaustion
  • Effective for chlorine, taste, odour, and VOC removal
  • Available in coconut shell, bituminous, and coal-based carbon
  • Used in pre-RO, post-RO, and standalone configurations
Precision GradeUnder-Sink RO & Drinking Water

Carbon Block Filter

Sub-Micron · Cyst Removal · Compact

Carbon block filters are manufactured by compressing powdered activated carbon into a solid cylindrical block - achieving sub-micron filtration that physically removes cysts, fine sediment, and organic chemicals simultaneously, making them ideal for point-of-use drinking water systems.

  • Sub-micron filtration down to 0.5 microns
  • Removes cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia
  • More consistent contact time than granular carbon
  • Compact form factor for under-sink and countertop units
  • Used in 5-stage and 7-stage RO purifier pre-filters

Important: What Carbon Filters Do NOT Remove

Activated carbon filters are not designed to remove dissolved salts, heavy metals (arsenic, lead, fluoride), nitrates, or biological contaminants such as bacteria and viruses. For these contaminants, a carbon filter is recommended as a pre-stage upstream of an RO membrane and UV steriliser - which together form a complete multi-barrier purification system.
