What Is a Heat Pump?

Hot Water Produced from Air Energy - Not Electricity

A heat pump water heater operates by extracting thermal energy from the surrounding air - using a refrigerant cycle to concentrate that energy and transfer it to water stored in an insulated tank. The process is thermodynamically far more efficient than conventional electric geysers, which convert electricity directly to heat at a 1:1 ratio.

At PSD Energy & Water Pure System, heat pumps are supplied and commissioned for homes, hotels, hospitals, hostels, and industries across Tamil Nadu - in capacities from 100 litres to 5,000 litres per day, with inverter and fixed-speed options available for every budget.

Heat pumps do not generate heat through resistance - they transfer ambient thermal energy from air into water, delivering 4 to 5 units of heat energy per unit of electricity consumed.

Works in All Weather

Modern inverter heat pumps are engineered to extract heat from ambient air down to temperatures of −5°C - making them effective year-round, even during Tamil Nadu's cooler winter mornings.

BEE-Rated & Certified Systems

All heat pumps supplied by PSD Energy carry BEE star ratings and are eligible for subsidy under MNRE's heat pump promotion scheme - ensuring quality and financial benefit.

Eco-Friendly Refrigerants

Systems are available with R32 or R410A refrigerants - offering lower global warming potential, higher energy efficiency, and compliance with current environmental regulations.

How It Works

The Six-Stage Thermal Cycle Explained

Heat pump water heaters follow a continuous refrigerant compression cycle - moving ambient heat into stored water at efficiencies that no resistance heater can match. Here is how each stage works.

01

Ambient Air Intake

A fan draws warm ambient air across the evaporator coil. Even at ambient temperatures of 15–35°C - typical of Tamil Nadu - sufficient thermal energy is available for extraction.

02

Refrigerant Evaporation

A cold liquid refrigerant (R32 or R410A) circulates through the evaporator coil and absorbs heat from the passing air - changing phase from liquid to low-pressure vapour.

03

Compressor Pressurisation

The low-pressure refrigerant vapour is compressed by the hermetic compressor - raising its temperature dramatically to 80–100°C before delivery to the condenser stage.

04

Condenser Heat Transfer

Hot compressed refrigerant passes through the condenser coil - transferring its thermal energy to the cold water circulating through the storage tank, heating it to 55–65°C.

05

Expansion & Reset

The now-cooled refrigerant passes through an expansion valve - dropping in pressure and temperature, returning to a cold liquid state ready to absorb ambient heat again.

06

Hot Water at Tap

Heated water at 55–65°C is stored in an insulated tank and is available on demand - with the cycle repeating continuously to maintain the target temperature throughout the day.

Financial Returns

  • Electricity bills are reduced by 70–80% compared to conventional electric geysers - with the savings being consistent month after month.
  • Payback periods of 2–4 years are typically achieved - after which hot water is delivered at near-zero energy cost for the remaining 12+ years.
  • MNRE subsidy may be availed for eligible residential and commercial installations - reducing the capital investment.
  • Hotel and hospital fuel costs from diesel boilers or LPG geysers are eliminated - with savings exceeding ₹50,000 per month in large installations.

Operational Comfort

  • Continuous hot water supply is maintained - heat pump systems run automatically and refill the tank without manual intervention.
  • Water temperatures between 55°C and 65°C are maintained consistently regardless of ambient temperature variations.
  • Electric backup integration is available as an optional feature - ensuring hot water availability even in exceptional cold-weather conditions.
  • Smart thermostat controls allow temperature and operating schedule to be programmed - optimising energy use further.

Environmental Impact

  • Carbon emissions are reduced by approximately 1.2 tonnes per year for each residential heat pump installed.
  • Fossil fuel consumption at power generation stations is directly reduced - as far less electricity is drawn per litre of hot water produced.
  • R32 refrigerant systems carry a global warming potential of just 675 - significantly lower than older R22 and R410A alternatives.
  • No combustion, no exhaust gases, and no toxic emissions - a completely clean thermal energy transfer process.
