High Iron in Your Water Is Costing You More Than You Think
Iron contamination is one of the most widespread water quality problems encountered in Tamil Nadu - particularly in areas relying on bore wells as the primary water source. Dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) is invisible in freshly drawn water but rapidly oxidises to insoluble ferric iron (Fe³⁺) upon contact with air, producing the characteristic rust colour and metallic taste.
Iron Level Impact Scale - WHO Guideline: 0.3 ppm
What Happens to Iron in Water
Dissolved Ferrous Iron (Fe²⁺)
Iron enters bore well water as a dissolved, invisible ferrous ion - drawn from iron-rich rock formations by groundwater.
Oxidation on Air Contact
When bore well water is exposed to air, Fe²⁺ oxidises to Fe³⁺ - precipitating as rust-coloured ferric hydroxide particles visible to the eye.
Deposition & Accumulation
Fe³⁺ particles settle on pipe walls, fixtures, and membranes - building up as orange deposits that block flow, cause staining, and harbour bacteria.
"Iron levels above 1 ppm in bore well water are routinely encountered across Karur, Salem, and Namakkal districts - making iron removal the first and most critical water treatment step before any downstream purification."
- PSD Energy, Karur
Rust-Coloured Water
A reddish-brown or yellow tint in tap water is the most visible sign of dissolved iron contamination - typically originating from bore well casings, old pipes, or iron-rich aquifer formations.
Metallic Taste & Odour
Water with iron levels above 0.3 ppm carries a distinct metallic taste and an unpleasant smell - making it unacceptable for drinking, cooking, and beverage preparation.
Pipeline & Fixture Staining
Iron precipitates as orange or brown deposits on bathroom tiles, kitchen sinks, washbasins, and toilet bowls - permanently staining surfaces if not treated promptly.
Equipment Damage
Iron buildup clogs RO membranes, water softeners, and geysers - reducing efficiency, increasing maintenance costs, and shortening the service life of all downstream water-using equipment.
Health Concern above 0.3 ppm
The WHO guideline for iron in drinking water is 0.3 ppm. Chronic consumption of water with elevated iron levels has been associated with liver and kidney stress in long-term studies.
Industrial Process Failure
Iron-contaminated water causes corrosion in boiler tubes, cooling towers, and process pipelines - leading to unplanned downtime, product contamination, and regulatory non-compliance.

Six-Stage Iron Removal Process
Raw Water Inlet
Iron-contaminated bore well or surface water is fed into the system through an inlet valve - with raw water TDS and iron ppm measured at this point to establish baseline treatment parameters.
Aeration / Oxidation
Dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) is first converted to insoluble ferric iron (Fe³⁺) through controlled aeration - using an air injection system, spray nozzle, or chemical oxidant (KMnO₄) dosing.
Filter Media Bed
Oxidised iron particles are trapped in a multi-layer filter bed containing Birm media, green sand, and anthracite - with each layer targeting progressively finer iron and manganese particles.
Fine Filtration
A 5-micron polypropylene cartridge filter is installed downstream - capturing any residual fine iron particles or filter media fines that pass through the main bed during initial operation.
Backwash Cycle
The filter bed is automatically or manually backwashed at scheduled intervals - flushing accumulated iron sludge and regenerating the media bed to restore full iron removal capacity.
Pure Water Output
Treated water with iron levels below 0.1 ppm exits the system - clear, odourless, and safe for drinking, process use, RO membrane pre-treatment, or distribution across the facility.
The Right Media for Your Iron Level
Iron removal filter media is selected based on raw water iron concentration, manganese content, pH, flow rate, and regeneration preference - each offering a different balance of performance, running cost, and maintenance requirement.
Birm Filter Media
Birm is a lightweight, granular catalytic filter media that accelerates the oxidation of dissolved iron without chemical addition - using dissolved oxygen already present in the water. It is regenerated during backwash with clean water alone.
- No chemical dosing required
- High iron removal - up to 10 ppm
- Easy maintenance & backwash
- Long media life of 8–10 years
- Cost-effective for domestic & commercial
Green Sand Plus
Green Sand Plus is a manganese dioxide-coated silica filter media capable of removing iron levels up to 15 ppm and manganese up to 3 ppm - regenerated using potassium permanganate (KMnO₄). It is the preferred media for high-iron and combined iron-manganese contamination.
- Handles iron up to 15 ppm
- Removes manganese simultaneously
- Effective for H₂S and turbidity
- KMnO₄ regeneration extends life
- Preferred for industrial applications
Aeration + Media System
For bore well water with iron levels above 10 ppm, a dedicated aeration tower is integrated ahead of the filter media bed - oxidising dissolved iron to ferric form before filtration, dramatically improving removal efficiency and media lifespan.
- Handles iron above 10–50 ppm
- No chemical dosing for oxidation
- Longer media bed life
- Suitable for heavy bore wells
- Preferred for large industrial units

Built for Long-Term Reliability
Every iron removal system is assembled with tested, corrosion-resistant components - because the consistency of iron removal over a 10-year system life depends entirely on the quality of materials from day one.
FRP / MS-Epoxy Pressure Vessel
Filter vessels are fabricated in fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) or MS-epoxy coated steel - rated for operating pressures up to 6 bar, corrosion-resistant, and available in diameters from 8 inch to 72 inch.
Multi-Port Valve (MPV)
A single multi-port valve (or multiple dedicated valves in larger systems) controls all operating modes - filtration, backwash, rinse, and bypass - simplifying operation and reducing pipe fitting complexity.
Birm / Green Sand Filter Media
BIS-grade Birm or Green Sand Plus media is packed to specified depth and uniformity - providing consistent iron removal performance throughout the media bed life of 8–12 years.
Pressure Gauges & Flow Meter
Inlet and outlet pressure gauges are fitted to monitor differential pressure across the bed - signalling when backwash is required. An inline flow meter records treated water volume.
Auto Backwash Controller
A timer-based or differential-pressure-triggered automatic backwash controller initiates the backwash cycle without manual intervention - ensuring the media is always in optimal condition.
Online Iron Analyser (Optional)
An online photometric iron analyser can be integrated - providing continuous real-time monitoring of outlet iron ppm and triggering alerts if breakthrough occurs before scheduled backwash.
